I have written on numerous occasions about the importance of being  informed and in control of your birth experience. After all, you will have been pregnant for nine months and are entitled to experience the birth of your choice. I am aware that sometimes, despite the best plans, things can go wrong. However, you can still be informed and be aware of your options and that is what this post is all about- to help you become as aware as possible.

 

All mums to be are recommended to attend pre birth classes and I have for a long time, been an advocate of the birthing classes that are delivered online, so you can consume and study them in your own time when it suits you, rather than an organisation or institution, I am not knocking the traditional classes, but there are many advantages to be had with home education.

 

Whilst some people certainly enjoy the ‘social’ aspect of attending a class with others at the same time, some others are happy to get the information in their own time and  enjoy the revision aspects, in that they can listen to their ipods while they get on with other chores and exercise.

 

Some further areas that are covered include the stages of labour, as well as the best way to plan your birth, so that it isn’t effectively planned for you. You have the choice to decide, barring an unexpected emergency. However, being informed gives you a power and sense of ability to control your birth and destiny.

 

By being prepared for any emergency, you are able to still maintain some decision process in the way it all turns out. Remember, if you can avoid any unnecessary intervention, you may well feel better in the long run.

 

Labour support issues are also covered to give you the most comfortable possible experience as well. You really do deserve to know what is in store so you can plan what you want.

 

The power of visualization is also covered which is very strong. The reason for this is that when you picture in your mind what you actually want, you are more likely to get it as well.

I do understand the requirement sometimes to speak to a person live, and your general care giver should be able to help out as well in this regard, with a phone call and so on as required.

 

Your Education Will Shape your Birth Experience

 

When it comes to women talking of their past birth experiences, you will be likely to hear stories falling into two broad groups- the ladies who have had a wonderful experience and those who have had an experience they would prefer to forget. It is certainly very sad when I hear of these negative experiences, and whilst there is never a hard and fast rule, the general reason falls into a case of the women not being as informed as they could and even, should be about the birth process.

 

After all, when you are fully informed about the process and your options, you are better able to choose what suits you, so you in effect, can develop control and a desire for a certain birth experience.

 

I am well aware that in some cases, the best laid plans can go to pot, but in all cases, being better informed will help you plan your desired birthing plan which will increase your chances of getting what you want on your very special day.

 

This is the path of an educated process. You owe it to yourself to know what is expected and what you can ask for and remember- it is your right and privilege. No one has the right to tell you how you should birth your baby, given that everything else is normal. Certainly, there can be exceptions in some cases, but over all, you still deserve to be as informed as possible. It’s your body and your baby. That is why I am so interested i as many people as possible being informed about their birth choices and general birth education.
