A common question that mothers ask is:

”How soon can I resume sex after the birth of my baby?”

The answer is that it depends, but it is not uncommon to be in the area of 6 weeks.

However, there are several provisos.

It should be noted that in some cases, if a tear or episiotomy has occured, it could take months to heal. This is not meant to be a depressing state of affairs, but rather, an honest explanation of the facts.

Other reasons that you may not enjoy sex, are that you may still be very tired, and in general, not feeling your most attractive self.

Other women report they are worried they may conceive again, and this in itself, can cause extra anxiety, and reluctance towards sex.

It is important to discuss your feelings and needs with your partner, and also, to be gentle with each other.

Each person is individual in their circumstances, and it is important to respect each other’s feelings.

However, when you have a greater desire to resume sex, it should be noted thazt the hormones released duringh sex can assist with contraction of the uterus.

Contraception

It should be noted that generally, if you are breastfeeding, you will not be prescribed any oestrogen, but rather, the progestogen pills.

Again, it is imperative that you consult your medical doctor for clarification, and advice.
